If you are planning a trip to Dubai or Abu Dhabi, then most probably like us, you are also wondering how much does it cost to visit Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Afterall, these are world’s most luxurious destinations. With the most luxurious hotels to stay, the most luxurious fine dine restaurants to eat in, the world’s biggest waterparks, tallest towers and largest malls. There’s premium entry fee to most of these places. And that quickly makes it really expensive to visit Dubai and Abu Dhabi. So, when I was planning my own trip to Dubai, which included a day trip to Abu Dhabi. I decided to explore free things to do in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. To be honest with you, there were not many :). But I was not really expecting as many as I could actually come up with.

For me, to have a budget trip to Dubai or Abu Dhabi, it will be crucial to include some of these free things to do in Dubai and Abu Dhabi in your list of things to do in Dubai or places to see in Abu Dhabi. So, let’s jump into the list.

On our own trip to Dubai, we tried to strike a balance between the costly, moderate cost and free things to do in Dubai. While we also had the fun of visiting Legoland Dubai and enjoying our time at the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo. At the same time, we equally enjoyed the Heritage Village Dubai and the public beaches of Dubai which were absolutely free.

Free things to do in Dubai and Abu Dhabi

#1 See the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo at Dubai Mall

Don’t get me wrong, there is a hefty ticket to explore the whole of Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo in the Dubai Mall. But, if you must do it for free, you can get a good glimpse of it from outside – for free. How? The aquarium tunnel at the Dubai Aquarium is very much visible from outside. So, when in Dubai Mall, you can simply stand in front of the Dubai aquarium , and within a matter of time, see almost all the different species of fishes that are on offer. Now, what you won’t be able to see from outside is the animals inside the Underwater Zoo – Penguin, Crocodile, many nocturnal animals, otters etc. But, fishes are all free for you!! Almost to the magnitude of the Aquarium in Singapore that we visited on our Singapore trip.

#2 Visit a public beach in Dubai or Abu Dhabi with free access

When it comes to a trip to Dubai or exploring places in Abu Dhabi, no one really thinks of beaches as the first thing. But, you have to visit one of the beaches at least when in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Not because most of these public beaches are absolutely free to explore. But more so because they have such crystal clear fine white sands and azure blue waters. And the water is so cool even on a warm day 🙂 Pack your own picnic, a blanket and a large umbrella. Or choose the shade of a tree for your own private spot on the beach. As the beachside shacks and benches will cost a fortune. But the changing rooms, the washrooms and the dip in the water are absolutely free.

Some of the must visit public beaches in Dubai are Palm Jumeirah and Kite Beach. Whereas in Abu Dhabi you must visit Corniche Beach and Al Bateen Beach.

#3 Explore around Palm Jumeirah Dubai

The Atlantis Dubai

Palm Jumeirah is a very unique locality in Dubai which we explored during our half day Dubai City Tour. Made with sand deposits in the form of a palm tree leaves on either side of a long road which ends at the sea. The Palm Jumeirah locality has beautiful residential villas, several cafes and fine restaurants and sea access through public plazas. So much so that exploring around the streets of the Palm Jumeirah is a delight in itself. And, at the end, you can see a stunning view of the Atlantis Dubai right in front of you. And sit on one of the beanbags near the beach to relax.

#4 Window shop at the Dubai Mall or Abu Dhabi Mall

Both Dubai and Abu Dhabi are home to several malls, including the world’s largest mall – Dubai Mall. There’s no limit to how much you can spend in these malls. If you decide to go on a shopping spree here. But, at the same time, you can do some delightful window shopping. And rather spend time exploring the free things to do in these malls. For instance, in the Dubai Mall, you can witness the artificial human waterfall, walk through the China Market, click pictures at instagram worthy spots, witness one of the largest dinosaur skeleton on display, and do a lot of fun activities for free.

#5 Watch the Dubai Fountain

Right outside the Dubai Mall, the Dubai Fountain comes live everyday evening 7:00pm onwards. There’s no ticket to watch this spectacular show of around 3 minutes that goes on every 10 minutes since then.

#6 Visit the Dubai Heritage Village or Abu Dhabi Heritage Village

The Heritage Village of Dubai and Abu Dhabi are recreations of the past life of Arab Villages. With beautiful sandstone like buildings, carved doors, intricate furnitures and several other artefacts. And they are absolutely free to explore. Also, these heritage villages are dotted with beautiful street lights, cozy cafes, heritage museums and also hold some traditional souks and cultural events to help us understand the emirates culture in depth. Walking through a Heritage Village was one of the first things we did as we set foot into Dubai. And we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

#7 Stroll through the Marina Drive in Dubai

The Marina Drive in Dubai is one of the favorite locations for night life. With beautiful restaurants and shopping centres dotting it’s periphery. While, dining and shopping here can be expensive. But, it is absolutely free to indulge in a walk or cycling around the Marina Drive. And clicking memorable pictures.

#8 Explore the street art of Dubai

Just like Chiang Mai in Thailand, Dubai also has some streets with very interesting street arts. City Walk, La Mer, Alserkal Avenue, JBR Murals and Dubai Walls are some of the prominent places to witness Dubai street art at its best. So, you can plan a walking tour around some or all of them exploring the Dubai Wall Art.

#20 Checkout the cultural foundation of Abu Dhabi

One of the top things to do for free in Abu Dhabi includes visiting Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation. This Foundation offers a range of facilities and amenities for visitors, including exhibition spaces, theatres, galleries, workshop studios, libraries, and performance venues. The institution also The institution supports initiatives related to traditional crafts, folklore, oral history, and intangible cultural heritage. As such you can witness some of the ongoing events and exhibits here.

#9 Visit the Coin Museum Dubai

Located in the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood near Bur Dubai, the Coin Museum is one of the few museums in Dubai which is free for visitors. In the coin museum visitors can browse through eight rooms and see various coins that have been used in Dubai over the past hundreds of years.

#10 Checkout the traditional souks of Dubai and Abu Dhabi

Dubai is one of the best shopping destinations around the world. Souks are traditional markets around Dubai and Abu Dhabi where you can do local like shopping. In Dubai, most of the souks are speciality markets that cater to one kind of items. Some of the famous souks of Dubai include Gold Souk, Spice Souk, Textile Souk and Perfume Souk. While the famous souks of Abu Dhabi include Madinat Zayed Gold Centre, Madinat Zayed shopping Centre, and Al Mina Fruit and Vegetable Market. Visit these markets to checkout how they operate, get the vibe of the street side local shopping. Visiting here reminded me of some of the night markets in Goa and flea markets of Bangkok. Bargaining is a must when shopping here.

#11 Enjoy a picnic at one of the lakes or public parks like Al Qudra lakes

Yes, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are not just about deserts. They also have some beautiful lakes like the Al Qudar Lake. So, if you are in mood for some refreshing free thing to do, pack a picnic from your apartment. And head to one of these lakes through a public transport. Enjoy a superb meal in a perfect setting. I am sure it will make your day.

#18 Visit Hatta Rock Pools

The Hatta Rock Pools are a series of natural rock formations and freshwater pools located in the Hatta region of Dubai. As such they are one of the best natural attractions to explore in Dubai. And one of the topmost free things to do in Dubai. Although, they are situated in the Hajar Mountains, approximately 115 kilometers east of Dubai city. So, you will have to pay the price of arranging a transport to visit here. But, you can spend a whole day here with the amount of activities lined up. Which include exploring the natural rock formations and the scenic surroundings, swimming in the waters and relaxing, hiking through scenic trails and exploring around.

#12 Visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi

To be honest with you, I have not seen any other mosque as grand and beautiful as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

#13 Offer your prayers at the BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi

The recently inaugurated BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi is the largest Hindu Temple of the region. And entry to the temple is free of charges. You just need to reach here early in the morning to avoid crowd. Otherwise, be ready to face long queues. Nevertheless, the temple is absolutely stunning both architecturally and in terms of the tranquil experience that it offers. Another must do on the list of free things to do in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

#14 Roam around the streets of Yas Island

There are a plethora of luxury activities to do on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi including Ferrari World. And some of the most luxurious restaurants and hotels to try. However, if you are in for some free things to do in Abu Dhabi, a bicycle ride around Yas Island or a walk across the neighbourhood makes for a perfect one. Since, just like Palm Jumeirah, it is a beautiful upscale modern locality to explore on foot.

And every bit of it speaks of opulent luxury. So, what are you waiting for. Just add it to your list of free things to do in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

#16 Explore the museums of UAE on free entry days

The museums of UAE declare certain occasions in the year as free entry days. Particularly as the summer months arrive and indoor activities become more prominent across UAE. So, if you can, time your trip to cover the free entry days. And you will have free entry to not one but several museums across Dubai and Abu Dhabi. #17 Go to Jameel Art Centre in Dubai

The Jameel Arts Centre is a contemporary art institution located in Dubai. It is housed within a striking architectural structure designed by Serie Architects. #19 Catch a glimpse of the Jumeirah Archeological Site

The Jumeirah Archaeological Site is an important historical and archaeological site located in the Jumeirah area of Dubai. For history lovers, the Jumeirah Archeological Site definitely tops the list of free things to do in Dubai. It includes the exploration of Jumeirah archeological excavation site. Which dates back over 1,000 years and is believed to have been an important settlement during the early Islamic period in the region. And a visit here can also include exploring rest of the Dubai Archeological Park and visitor center.

#21 Explore the galleries and exhibitions at Manarat Al Saadiyat Abu Dhabi

Manarat Al Saadiyat means “place of enlightenment” in Arabic. It is a cultural center located on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi. #22 Pay a visit to the Wahat Al Karama Abu Dhabi

Wahat Al Karama features several architectural elements and symbolic structures that convey themes of sacrifice, solidarity, and resilience. Qasr Al Muwaiji is a historic fort and cultural site located in Al Ain, near Abu Dhabi. This fort holds special significance in Emirati history as the birthplace of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who played a pivotal role in the development and modernisation of the United Arab Emirates. The fort served as the headquarters of the ruler of Abu Dhabi. And has witnessed several historical events of immense importance. Entry to the fort is free for all.

#24  Wander around Al Jahili Fort

Al Jahili Fort is a historic fort located in the city of Al Ain, Abu Dhabi. It is free to explore. In fact, Al Jahili Fort is one of the oldest and most significant historical landmarks in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. And is renowned for its impressive architectural design and sturdy construction. Visiting here will definitely remind you of some of the forts and palaces of Rajasthan if you are from India. Particularly the Khaba Fort Jaisamler and Amer Fort Jaipur.

#25 Visit Green Mubazzarah Abu Dhabi

Green Mubazzarah is a popular park and tourist destination located at the base of Jebel Hafeet mountain in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi. And theres a lot of things to do here. That also, for free. These include visiting natural hot springs, streams, pools, and waterfalls throughout the park. lush green landscapes, shaded picnic areas, children’s playgrounds, and barbecue pits to enjoy. Walking, jogging, or cycling along the park’s trails. And even adventure activities like ziplining, mountain biking and hiking.

Green Mubazzarah provides visitors with essential facilities and services, including parking areas, restrooms, prayer rooms, and refreshment kiosks selling snacks and beverages. So, you can visit here with your kids without any worry about the facilities.

#26 Go flamingo spotting at Al Wathba Wetland Reserve

The Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is a protected area located in the eastern region of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, near the town of Al Wathba. The region includes a variety of landscapes including salt flats, sabkhas (salt flats covered with salt-tolerant vegetation), mudflats, freshwater pools, and marshes. Which support a plethora of bird species including migratory birds, waterfowl, shorebirds, and various aquatic species. But the main attractions are the baby pink flamingoes who flock here in huge numbers. A perfect eye treat – head here to watch the flamingos for free.

After watching the flamingos, you can proceed to see some sand scultpures at Al Wathba sand area. These are also free to watch and admire.

The Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is open to the public and accessible via the Al Ain Road (E22). Visitors can reach the reserve by car or organised tour. However, organised tours will charge a bit. While entry to the park is free of cost.

  • Sometimes there are offers running on attractions. Make use of them as much as possible. For instance, Legoland Dubai often has food and beverage offers. Like, when we visited in the month of Ramadan, kids ate free at the pizza and pasta buffet with parents. And the refreshment sipper bottle we bought at entry to Legoland provided us with full day of unlimited beverage refill for our family of 4 at a one time cost of AED 80.
  • If you must eat outside, eat from roadside stalls or foot courts in malls or smaller restaurants in areas like Bur Dubai.

General tips on cutting cost when visiting Dubai and Abu Dhabi

  • Try to shop from local markets and souvenir shops outside of malls. The malls are very costly and mostly suitable for only window shopping.
  • Make the most of your time and your stay in Dubai and Abu Dhabi by reaching attractions early. And staying back till late.
  • Book your trip in advance for better prices, although attractions prices remain the same. You might get better deals on flight and hotels when booked earlier.
  • Most important : Set a daily budget for yourself and try not to exceed this budget.
