Some beaches are just divine. And Radhanagar beach, Havelock Island is just one of them. As I have visited many other beaches in India in Mahabalipuram, Goa, Kerala, Pondicherry, I can definitely say, it is the best beach in India so far. Why you might ask. So, apart from the scenic beauty, it has such gentle slope and such fine sand. That it automatically becomes the love of those who want to either stroll along the coastline or dip into the sea. The waves are gentle, the color of the water is beautiful blue-green. The beach is just perfect to feast your eyes, take a stroll, laze around on the fine white sand, dig the sand and build your castles or just watch the waves.
Our experience at Radhanagar Beach, Havelock Island
On our 7 days trip to the Andaman Islands, we visited Havelock Island on the third day. And in the evening, we went to Radhanagar Beach. It was far from our resort, Symphony Palm Resort. So, we talked to the taxi driver who dropped us from the jetty to hotel. And fixed the time of 3:00pm to head to the beach. (PS: here’s a complete Itinerary covering our 7 days trip to Andaman) As soon as we reached there, the beauty of the beach caught our attention. Under the receding sun, we decided to explore the beach by walking along its length. At the far corner we could see a stretch of coral rocks. And that was our target – to reach that spot.
So, we walked as the slow waves caressed our feet. The sand below our feet was firmer at times and softer at times. As the waves drifted washing the shore we spotted small fishes of different varieties, corals and tiny white crabs while we walked ahead.
The eastern side of the beach
Upon reaching the eastern end of the beach, we were greeted by a scene that we have so far not seen on any other beaches. What looked like rocks from a distance were actually coral formations exposed by the receding sea. They looked mesmerizing under the influence of the evening sky. Half submerged into the emerald blue sea. A picture perfect place! Some of us sat here for sometime, while others strolled around. Aashi seemed to have become the little explorer who was easily squeezing her way between the rocks looking for some hidden treasure.
After a while, we decided to head back towards the other end of the beach. Thus chasing the receding sun in the process. And capturing the colors of the evening sky in our camera. The sun slowly set as we slowly strolled along the beach. It gave us the opportunity to capture and watch one of the most beautiful sunsets on the beach that we have so far seen. We stopped several times in between, captivated by the view.
Back to the parking lot
There were a lot of people on the beach at this time. It was around 5:00pm. And the sun had almost set. Soon darkness was going to spread across the beach as there is no arrangement of any kind of lighting here. So, the coast guards started urging the visitors to leave the beach and come out of the waters. We also decided to head back to the parking lot where our taxi was awaiting to take us back to the hotel.
The whole pathway from the beach back to the parking lot must be around 300-400 meters. It is dotted with small shops and vending carts. They sell food, snacks, refreshments like tender coconut, pani puri, bhel puri, cut fruits, juices etc. Some also sell local handicrafts. While a few shops sell beach friendly cloths and garments.
By the time we reached back to our taxi it was completely dark. We reached back to our hotel by 6:00pm. Wherein it felt more like 8:00pm. So, basically the place is very peaceful and it gets dark very quickly in the evening.
General tips on visiting Radhanagar Beach, Havelock Island
- There are snacks shops on the way to the beach but no major food outlets. Better to carry your food with you in case you want to spend more time here and have lunch on the beach
- Keep a spare set of cloths with you for each member of your family or group visiting in case you get tempted to get into the waters
- There is no arrangement of any kind of lighting around the beach. So, visitors are allowed only till max 5:30pm before it gets dark. So, plan your visit to the beach accordingly. When I visited in October, it got dark by 5:00pm. So I am guessing in the months of November and December it might be getting dark even earlier.
- If you are staying at a walking distance from the beach then nothing like it. But if you are staying farther then talk to a taxi driver, fix the rates that seem reasonable to you and then fix a timing with him to pick you up for going to the beach. Since you never know later on the mobile network will work or not. Ask for a round trip wherein the driver will take you to the beach and wait there for you in the designated parking lot near the beach and then come back with you, dropping you back at the hotel.
- Carry waterproof footwear
- If you are carrying bottled water please don’t dump the plastic bottles in or around the beach. Use a dustbin or carry the bottle back to your hotel to dispose of responsibly. This small step will go a long way
- Since the Andaman Islands are located in the east, it gets dark early. As early as 5:30pm. The road that leads to the beach is a narrow single lane road for a good extent of 2-3km. And most of the taxis drive rash. Instruct your driver to be careful. We avoided a near collision by fraction of seconds on our way back from the beach to the hotel.
- Carry sufficient cash. Taxis, local shops and most of the other local businesses transact in cash here.
