Another year is nearing its end. And we are looking at a new year in a week’s time. Just like every year, I have been looking at the long weekends and probable vacation periods in the next year. To be able to plan my travel alongside my day job. And while doing this research, I thought, why not share it with you. In the form of a list of the best places to visit each month of the year with your family. Either in India or from India. Some of these destinations we have already visited. And others are on our bucket list. Many of these we plan to cover in the coming year. And we will definitely share details of each destination with you over the next year. For enjoying snow and winter head to places in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Like Dalhousie, Shimla and Manali , Nainital or Mussorrie, Dhanautali or Auli. But if you want to enjoy the beaches, then Goa is your best bet at this time of the year. While enjoying history and culture, opt for places in Rajasthan or Gujarat as the weather in these states gets very harsh in subsequent months. We have several places in Rajasthan at the end of the year and in January. Like a couple of days in Jodhpur, 2 days that we spent in Jaisalmer and a trip to Jaipur.

For international travel from India, Dubai is a great option for kids and families. With cheap Delhi to Dubai flights available nowadays, it is a hassle-free trip to plan. Another beautiful location that is a favourite among Indians is the Maldives. And last but not the least, you can also head to Thailand. In fact, a few years back, we did a 2 week trip to Thailand at the beginning of the year. And it was amazing.

It continues to snow heavily in the Himalayas in the month of February as well. Particularly some places in Kashmir like Gulmarg turn into a complete winter wonderland. So you can head here to enjoy snow and winter. For beaches, you can head to Andaman and Nicobar islands. As this is an ideal time to visit this place. Given the weather is very supportive. Also, you can enjoy the Rann Festival in Gujarat, head to Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan or explore the beautiful North East India like Meghalaya in February.

Head to Mauritius or Phuket for the beautiful beaches and apt weather in February. You can enjoy the famous Swiss-Alps train journeys this month as well. As this is the month of heavy snowfall in Switzerland.

While you can still witness snow cover in the upper Himalayas, the weather tends to start getting warmer in the lower parts of North India. This is an idle month to visit beautiful valleys like Palampur in Himachal Pradesh or Doodhpathri and Srinagar in Kashmir. It is also a shoulder season to visit Gujarat and Rajasthan in the west. And Sikkim and Darjeeling in the northeast.

April marks the beginning of summer vacations in South India. It is also a perfect time to visit many places. You can head to Kashmir like our one-week trip to Kashmir, to enjoy some of the leftover snow as well as the green meadows. Or, you can go trekking in the Himalayas in Tirthan Valley. Also, explore Naggar and Kasol. Also, this is a perfect time to visit Arunachal Pradesh. And explore the beautiful Uttarakhand right before the monsoons arrive. Head to quaint hill stations like Almora, Bhimtal or Munsiyari for a peaceful break from the hustle and bustle of life.

April is also a perfect time to visit most of Central and Western Europe. We did our 2 weeks Europe trip in April wherein we visited Italy for 6 days, Switzerland for 4 days, Paris and Amsterdam. The cold still persists in Europe during this time but it is bearable. And the peak tourist season has not yet started. So, one can enjoy cheaper rates.

May marks the beginning of pre-monsoon showers in India. This makes travel in some parts of the country difficult. But at the same time, we have found it to be one of the best times to explore some hill stations in South India. Where the temperature drops with the pre-monsoon showers, the greenery increases. And the weather becomes perfectly pleasant. Some such destinations include Coorg, Chikmagalur, Ooty, Yercaud, Kodaikanal etc. May is also a beautiful time to visit Meghalaya, the abode of clouds.

Europe remains a perfect choice to visit in May as well. I would personally prefer to visit countries like Greece, the Amalfi coast in Italy, Spain and Iceland in May. Because it is still shoulder season in these places. This means the rates are cheaper and the crowd is minimal. Also, if you want to experience the beauty of Australia and New Zealand in the winter then May is a perfect time to visit here as well. Singapore is another popular destination to visit in May.

June brings the onset of monsoons. With landslides following heavy rains, it becomes difficult to navigate the higher mountains. But there are so many places in India which are good to visit in Monsoons. You can enjoy the beauty of some of the rainforests in India at this time. Visit Agumbe, Ooty, Darjeeling or Sikkim to experience the misty, cloudy weather in June. Also, you can visit Wayanad and Munnar in Kerala at this time of the year.

This is a good time to visit Kerala, Udaipur, Mount Abu, Some of the upper Himalayas, Spiti Valley in Himachal and several other such places. It is one of the best months to visit Leh and Ladakh. Or explore the coasts of Tamil Nadu like Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry.

Rains continue in India in the month of August. But at the same time, there are also dry spells with cloudy skies. Which are perfect to explore some otherwise very hot destinations. Like Hampi and Badami. Or, Chitradurga Fort in Karnataka. Pondicherry and Mahabalipuram. In North India, this is the perfect time to go on some treks in the Himalayas. The most famous one is the Valley of Flowers. One can also visit the eastern coast of Visakhapatnam and the western coast of Mangalore, Udupi, Murudeshwar and Gokarna.

Some of our favorite places that we have explored in this month include Jaipur, Udaipur, Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur in Rajasthan. Yercaud and Ooty in South India. And Sikkim and Darjeeling in East India. In North India, one must still exert caution when visiting the hill stations as sudden spells of cloud bursts or landslides can be challenging and dangerous. However, one can visit the plains like Chandigarh, Amritsar, Varanasi, Allahabad, Gorakhpur, Nalanda, Bodh Gaya etc.

October is when the perfect season for holidays starts setting in India. In many places, the temperature is neither high nor low, it is comfortable enough to explore during the day. And the seas are mostly calm with no signs of cyclones. So, we have personally explored a lot of India during this month. Last year, we went on a 3-week long road trip across Madhya Pradesh and explored the complete state of Madhya Pradesh. The year before, we visited Andaman and Nicobar Islands in October. And this year, we explored Kerala on a road trip in the month of October, covering a lot of hills as well as coastal parts of the state. Almost any place in India can be visited in the month of October.

Maldives, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Bhutan, and Nepal are some of the best countries at a short distance from India in October. If you don’t mind flying longer and spending some extra money then head to Lapland in October with your kids and family. This is definitely one of our dream vacation destinations. And October is neither very chilly nor hot here. Bearable for us Indians. While the snowfall has already started this month, you can enjoy fresh snow here.

For us, Goa is one of our all-time favourites which you can visit in November. Also, you can plan a trip to the unexplored and unexploited Lakshadweep Islands in November. As the Islands open up for tourists around this time.

December is the month of holidays all over the world. And the same holds true for India also. The onset of winter as well as the holiday season marks a new beginning at the end of the year. We have ourselves done some of the most wonderful holidays at the end of December. You can visit the Himalayas to enjoy fresh snowfalls and the beaches of Goa or Kerala like Varkala and Kovalam for a serene holiday under the sun. Also, you can visit the central and western Indian states of Gujarat, Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh this month. And, you can also visit the eastern states like Orissa, West Bengal and even North East India. The only caveat is that most tourist places tend to get very crowded at the end of the year. So, we are witnessing a trend where people prefer to go on a vacation in December first to the third week than December last week.

Europe for Christmas markets, particularly Germany. Alps for skiing and snow sports. Lapland for the winter wonderland and magic of Santa Claus village. Phuket and Maldives for a pristine winter break on a sunny island. There are a plethora of options to explore in December.
