Our beautiful weekend trip from Bangalore to Shimoga & Malnad

There are so many places to visit around Bangalore that when it comes to selecting a weekend getaway from Bangalore, it is really a tricky choice. Having been to most of the famous tourist places in South India like the hills of Coorg and Chikmagalur in Karnataka. And the princess of hill stations – Kodaikanal and the most beautiful Ooty in Tamil Nadu. Even Yercaud and Horsley Hills in Andhra, we had still not been to Shimoga and the Malnad region around it. So, when a long weekend arrived in the middle of June, Shimoga immediately popped up in mind. As, in monsoons season this whole region gets covered in a carpet of lush greenery. And the Jog Falls, one the highest waterfalls of India located near Shimoga, also starts gushing through huge volume of water. So, we immediately decided on Shimoga, booked our hotel there, packed. And within no time, the long weekend arrived. And we were on our way from Bangalore to Shimoga.

Bangalore to Shimoga road trip

The distance from Bangalore to Shimoga is approximately 300 km. There are two ways you can drive for your weekend trip from Bangalore to Shimoga :

Route 1 : Bangalore -> Neelamangala -> Mangalore highway -> Chikmagalur -> Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary -> Shimoga

Route 2: Bangalore-> Neelamangala -> Chitradurga -> Channagiri -> Shimoga

While the former is more scenic as it passes through the hills of Chikmagalur and the lush green Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary. But, the later is in much better condition. And takes much less time. So, we decided to take Route 2 on our weekend trip from Bangalore to Shimoga. The drive from Bangalore to Shimoga was a smooth one. We started around 5:30am from home. And stopped before Chitradurga on the main Bangalore – Hubli highway for breakfast.

Post breakfast, we continued straight to Shimoga, reaching comfortably by 1:00pm. If you have not visited the mighty Chitradurga Fort yet, I highly recommend stopping here on the way. The fort opens by 9:00am. So, you can reach here in the early hours. And easily spend a couple of hours exploring the Chitradurga Fort. Actually, you can have your lunch at nearby KSTDC Hotel Mayura before starting from Chitradurga. And reach Shimoga comfortably by evening 3:30pm – 4:00pm.

Where to stay in Shimoga

Royal Orchid Shimoga room

The town of Shimoga has slowly got several hotels – from basic to high end. And then there are the famous home stays of the Malnad region. You should definitely stay in a homestay for an authentic experience. But, since we made our own plan the very end moment, we booked the Royal Orchid Shimoga which is located in the centre of the town. Although we had great experience staying at Royal Orchid Brindavan Gardens and Royal Orchid Hampi earlier. But, we found Royal Orchid Shimoga to be very basic compared to these other hotels of the same chain. Nevertheless, it was a ok-ok stay. Given the hotel was located in the centre of the town, all the facilities including restaurants and shops were at a stones throw away. So, overall, we didn’t have any major discomfort.

The hotel should focus on providing more prompt service. And the restaurant really needs to be bigger. The ratio of rooms to restaurant seating is totally off proportion here. So much so that you might need to wait in queue for your turn at breakfast and lunch time.

Things to do in Shimoga

Day 1

On our first day on our weekend trip from Bangalore to Shimoga, once we reached the hotel we took some rest. And then around 4:00pm, we headed to visit the Shimoga Zoo & Safari. As we stepped out in the town, we were highly impressed by the cleanliness & the broad roads of the town. Overall, Shimoga is a small but very well managed town. The distance of Shimoga Zoo (Also known as Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari) was around 10km from our hotel. And it took us around 15 minutes to reach here.

We did a safari in the Shimoga zoo. And then explored around on foot. Overall, it was 6:00pm by the time we started back from there to our hotel.

Day 2

On the second day of our Shimoga trip, we drove to Jog Falls – one of the highest and most majestic waterfalls of India. After having visited Athirapally Waterfalls on our week long Kerala road trip, expectations were high from Jog Falls. The drive from Shimoga to Jog Falls is a very scenic one. While the roads are in excellent condition, they pass through lush green forest regions amidst the hills. It takes around 1 hour to reach Jog Falls from Shimoga. Near Jog Falls there is a parking facility and a small restaurant. Rest room facilities are also available. But, it was all crowded and drizzling as well.

The whole area was covered in mist and cloud. And we had to wait a good amount of time to get the glimpses of the falls. They are definitely very mesmerising. Jog Falls is one of the highest waterfalls in India, cascading down from a height of 253 meters (830 feet). It consists of four distinct falls – Raja, Rani, Roarer, and Rocket.

On our way back from Jog Falls, we took a diversion to Honnemaradu. It is a beautiful backwater lake with scenic beauty out of this world. However the road trip to Honnemaradu was quiet an adventure. I need to dedicate another post to do justice to this whole experience. Back from Honnemaradu, we reached our hotel by 7:30pm. And called it a day.

Day 3

The third and last morning of our trip in Shimoga arrived in no time. Today, post breakfast, we checked out from our hotel. And then first proceeded to Sakrebyle Elephant Camp. Here, we interacted with the re-habiliated elephants, fed & bathed them. And then proceeded on a boat ride on the river backwaters behind it. Around 12:30pm, we started on our drive back to Bangalore. And reached home by 7:30 pm, taking couple of breaks for lunch & snack on the way.

When is the best time to visit Shimoga

The best time to visit Shimoga is during the cooler and more comfortable months, which typically span from October to March. However, since I like lush greenery and the clouds, I often enjoy visiting the places in South India during the monsoon seasons. Just like I had thoroughly enjoyed my monsoon trip to Ooty, I enjoyed my trip to Shimoga during monsoons as well. Even the waterfalls have a lot of water during and right after the monsoons season. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect during different seasons:

Post-Monsoon (October to November)

  • Weather: Pleasant with lush green landscapes.
  • Highlights: Waterfalls are still flowing strongly from the monsoon rains, making it a great time to visit places like Jog Falls, Barkana Falls, and others.
  • Activities: Sightseeing, trekking, and nature walks.

Winter (December to February)

  • Weather: Cool and comfortable with temperatures ranging from 14°C to 28°C (57°F to 82°F).
  • Highlights: Ideal weather for exploring the natural beauty and historical sites without the discomfort of heat and humidity.
  • Activities: Wildlife safaris, trekking, and visiting hill forts and temples.

Pre-Summer (March)

  • Weather: Warm but still pleasant enough for outdoor activities.
  • Highlights: Flowers are in bloom, and the region’s flora is at its most vibrant.
  • Activities: Sightseeing, photography, and exploring the outdoors.

Monsoon (June to September)

  • Weather: Heavy rainfall, which can make travel and outdoor activities challenging.
  • Highlights: The region becomes extremely lush and green, and the waterfalls are at their most spectacular.
  • Activities: If you enjoy the monsoon atmosphere and don’t mind the rain, this can be a good time for photography and enjoying the greenery.

Summer (April to May)

  • Weather: Hot and humid, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 36°C (77°F to 97°F).
  • Highlights: Not the best time for outdoor activities due to the heat, but early mornings and evenings can still be pleasant.
  • Activities: Visiting cooler, shaded areas like caves and temples.

Overall, the post-monsoon and winter seasons are the most favourable times to visit Shimoga, offering pleasant weather and ideal conditions for exploring its natural and historical attractions.

Cuisines to try in Shimoga and Malnad Region

Last but not the least, lets talk about what food and cuisines you can try while exploring the Malnad region and around Shimoga. The Malnad region, including Shimoga, is known for its unique and flavourful cuisine that features a variety of local ingredients and traditional cooking methods. Some of the must try food in this region include Pathrode, Kotte Kadubu(Steamed rice dumplings wrapped in jackfruit leaves.), Benne Kadubu(Soft, steamed rice dumplings often served with butter (benne) and chutney), Huruli Saaru(Horse gram soup flavored with spices and tamarind), Kaayi Kadubu(Steamed dumplings made from rice flour and filled with a sweet coconut and jaggery mixture), Tuppa Dosa(A crispy, golden dosa cooked with ghee (clarified butter)), Jackfruit Dosa. Avarekalu Huli – A curry made from avarekalu (hyacinth beans) cooked with spices and tamarind and Halasina Hannina Happala (A sun-dried snack made from ripe jackfruit pulp)

A simple breakfast spread at an airbnb

Banana and Jackfruit preparations seem to be specifically famous in this region. We bought a lot of Jackfruit chips & banana chips from a famous local bakery. It is so famous that resellers in Bangalore order items from there and then sell across Bangalore. We found the chips to be more crispy yet soft, and very flavourful, as compared to the packaged ones we often find in markets in Banglore and online.
