Day 1: Touchdown and Settling In on our family adventure with kids in NYC
We flew into JFK. And immediately picked up our rental car. That might sound strange. As, isn’t NYC all about walking and subways? Sure, if you’re solo. But with kids, backpacks, strollers, and snack bags? Let’s just say I’m glad we didn’t rely on public transit. And rather rented out a car for our family adventure with kids in NYC.
We used this site to find a car rental in New York City that was affordable and close to the airport. And within an hour, we were checked into our hotel in Midtown. Also, out the door for our first adventure. Bryant Park!! And the New York Public Library. Which has a children’s center and plenty of room to run.
The kids were immediately captivated by the library’s atmosphere. Including the grand reading rooms, the whispering visitors. And especially the children’s section with its cozy reading nooks. Overall, we spent nearly two hours there. Which gave everyone time to decompress from the flight and adjust to the city’s energy.
Day 2: Central Park & Museum Magic visit on our family adventure with kids in NYC
No NYC family trip is complete without Central Park. So, we let the kids burn off energy at the playgrounds before visiting the American Museum of Natural History — dinosaurs, space, and butterflies all in one stop. Since, having the car meant we could leave extra jackets and snacks in the trunk. And skip long subway stairs. Also, it gave us flexibility when our youngest needed an unexpected nap. A quick loop in the car and she was out in minutes.
The museum proved to be a hit with both kids. Our eleven-year-old was mesmerized by the planetarium show. While our six-year-old couldn’t get enough of the life-size whale replica. Overall, we easily spent four hours there. Taking breaks whenever needed without worrying about strict schedules or transportation timing. Of course a trip to Las Vegas or a trip to the beaches of Miami is often on the cards for visitors to US. But the kind of options you get in New York, make it win over all other destinations.
Day 3: A Day Trip to Brooklyn
One of the best parts of having a rental was the ability to venture beyond Manhattan. We spent this day in Brooklyn: starting at Prospect Park, grabbing pizza from Lucali, and walking through DUMBO with its iconic bridge views.
The drive back over the Manhattan Bridge at sunset — kids dozing off in the back seat, skyline lighting up — was honestly one of the highlights of the trip. Brooklyn offered a completely different pace and feel from Manhattan, and the kids loved seeing the city from a new perspective. We discovered small neighborhood parks and local ice cream shops that we never would have found relying solely on tourist guides.
Day 4: Rainy Day? No Problem
New York threw us a curveball with a full day of rain. Instead of trudging through puddles, we hopped in the car and visited The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, followed by lunch at Chelsea Market and indoor play at Color Factory.
If we’d been on foot, that day would’ve been a wash. With the car, it became one of our most fun and flexible days. The Intrepid was particularly exciting for the kids — they got to explore actual aircraft and learn about space exploration while staying completely dry. Chelsea Market provided the perfect lunch spot with its diverse food options that satisfied everyone’s preferences.
Day 5: Saying Goodbye (For Now)
On our last morning, we packed up, loaded the kids into the car, and made a few last stops — Levain Bakery for cookies, a scenic drive through Riverside Park, and a relaxed return to the airport without the stress of dragging luggage on the subway.
We took our time saying goodbye to the city, making one final loop through Times Square so the kids could see it in daylight. The car allowed us to create these spontaneous moments without worrying about catching specific trains or managing multiple bags on crowded platforms.
Why We’d Do It the Same Way Again
New York is magical. But it’s also massive, chaotic, and unpredictable. Renting a car gave our family a layer of flexibility and comfort that we didn’t realize we needed until we had it. We could shift plans on the fly, carry everything we needed without overloading ourselves, and explore beyond the typical tourist map — all while keeping the kids happy (and parents sane). The car served as our mobile base camp, storage unit, and quiet retreat all rolled into one.
Beyond the practical benefits, having our own transportation allowed us to discover neighborhoods and experiences that many tourists miss. We found playgrounds in residential areas, stumbled upon local festivals, and created memories that went far beyond the standard NYC checklist.
