A smooth sailing Bangalore to Hyderabad drive

While we take a lot of weekend getaways from Bangalore, the destinations we always think of are a staycation in Coorg surrounded by lush greenery, the wandering through rainforests of Wayanad, the backwaters of Kabini or the coffee estates of Chikmagaluru. But, come monsoons and with heavy rain a drive from Bangalore to these destinations become challenging. So is true for a Bangalore to Goa drive or a trip from Bangalore to Ooty or exploring offbeat tracks in Kodaikanal. And then we have been so many times to the charming costal town of Pondicherry and resorts of Mahabalipuram that when another long weekend arrived, we wanted to explore a new destination.

Thus materialised our Bangalore to Hyderabad road trip. And in this post, I will give you all the information required for planning a Bangalore to Hyderabad road trip. Actually, we have drove from Bangalore to Hyderabad earlier also on our 2 weeks road trip to Maharastra. But this time, we went for a staycation in Hyderabad. And also decided to explore the city of Nizams and historical places to see in Hyderabad. As well as the Ramoji Film City. What did our 4 days trip to Hyderabad look like? Just wait for the next post to get all the details. For now, let me take you on a Bangalore to Hyderabad drive.

Bangalore to Hyderabad Route

From Bangalore to Hyderabad is a straight drive on NH44. This is the same National Highway that runs all the way from the capital of Kashmir – Srinagar in northernmost India  to Kanyakumari in extreme south. And passes through several important destinations. The NH 44 is in good condition for most parts from Bangalore to Hyderabad except for few very minor, <1 km stretches where the road widening work is in progress.

So, the route that we took on NH 44 was –

Bangalore -> Chikkaballapur -> Anantpur -> Kurnool -> Hyderabad

The drive from Bangalore to Hyderabad is a smooth one. And the Bangalore to Hyderabad drive time is ~10 – 11 hours with ample breaks. The road distance from Bangalore to Hyderabad is ~580km. On our first road trip when we were en-route to Maharashtra, we didn’t find many food options on this road. But things have changed a lot in the past couple of years.

Refreshment Options on Bangalore to Hyderabad Drive Route

The first refreshment option that we were really excited about was the “Big Bay” – apparently India’s largest food court which is also called food mall. It is recently opened and has a lot of outlets. But alas, most of them are closed in the morning. And open after 9:00am. We started on our Bangalore to Hyderabad drive around 5:30am. And as such, reached Big Bay around 6:45 am. At that time, only one outlet of Burger King was open. However, the restrooms are really clean here. And the sitting options are nice. So, after taking a “take out” order from Burger King, we enjoyed our breakfast meals sitting on the benches outside and enjoying the cool morning breeze.

Right after Big Bay, there are many food options available on the Bangalore to Hyderabad drive route. There is another food court on the opposite side of the road, many south Indian famous chains of restaurants like Kamat, Sarvana Bhavan etc. Usually those are our preferred outlets when on a road trip in south India. Particularly on Krishnagiri route. Or, when heading towards Chitradurga Fort, Shimoga, Hubli or Goa. So, overall there is no lack of options for food anymore.

For lunch, we stopped post Kurnool on this dhaba that had both AC, Non-AC as well as outdoor sitting. And the outdoor sitting was what we enjoyed. Lunch was simple rice and curry along with a fried rice and some cold beverages.

Reaching Hyderabad from Bangalore

Inspite of taking these breaks, and several others in between for kids, we hit Hyderabad border by 3:30pm. There was some traffic right before reaching the city. Finally, we reached our hotel, Marriott Resort and Conventional Centre Hyderabad by 5:00pm. The hotel is located right opposite the Hussain Sagar Lake – largest lake of Hyderabad. And we had a wonderful stay here. Which I will cover later.

You will find traffic inside the city of Hyderabad just like any other metro city of India. But inspite of it being a weekday and the time we entered Hyderabad being peak traffic hour, there was moving traffic all along – better than what I had expected!! 🙂

The good thing is that traffic is not very high on Bangalore to Hyderabad route. We have taken several road trips in India.
