3 days Sapa trip itinerary from Hanoi

On my 3 weeks trip to Vietnam,  my 3 days Sapa trip itinerary from Hanoi was perhaps one of the most spontaneous trip I have done. When initially I was sorting the places I wanted to visit on my Vietnam trip, Sapa never featured in it. Because, at the first glimpse, a trip to Sapa resonated very similar to my previous trips to the hills and mountains in India. Like my 5 days trip to Nainital and Mussoorie, or the numerous trips to Coorg including the staycation at Montrose Golf Resort Coorg. As the tropical landscapes are so similar.

However, at the last moment, I decided to take the plunge. And include Sapa in my Vietnam trip itinerary alongside a couple of days in Ho Chi Minh, a visit to Chu Chi Tunnel, explore the cute hill station of Dalat, spend a couple of days in the stunning coastal town of Nha Trang, spend 4 days in Da Nang, visit the most romantic town of Hoi An and the historical town Hue and finally arrive in Hanoi!!

While based ourselves in Hanoi, we explored North Vietnam over a week. Visiting the attractions of Hanoi, taking a day trip to Ha Long Bay and finally visiting Sapa. So, in this post let me take you on a virtual trip to Sapa with me. To help you understand if doing a trip to Sapa on your Vietnam trip makes sense.

About Sapa

Sapa is a picturesque mountain town in northern Vietnam, nestled in the Hoàng Liên Son range near the Chinese border. Known for its cool climate, terraced rice fields, and vibrant hill tribe culture, it’s one of the country’s most famous trekking and cultural destinations. The region is home to ethnic minority groups such as the Hmong, Dao, Tay, and Giay, who still maintain traditional lifestyles, clothing, and markets.

The landscape is breathtaking—rolling green hills, plunging valleys, cascading waterfalls, and views of Fansipan, Vietnam’s highest peak (3,143 meters). Visitors come to trek between villages, explore vibrant markets, ride the cable car to Fansipan’s summit, and enjoy homestays with local families.

Sapa’s charm lies in its mix of natural beauty and cultural richness. You can wander misty mountain paths, photograph golden rice terraces in autumn, or sip warm tea while watching clouds drift over the town. It’s an ideal escape for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone seeking a slower, more authentic Vietnam experience.

Our 3 days Sapa trip itinerary from Hanoi

Day 1 of our 3 days Sapa trip itinerary from Hanoi

A Hanoi to Sapa drive

We had booked a round trip cab for our 3 days Sapa trip itinerary from Hanoi. Since, we were traveling with friends and family. That way, the cost was almost same as booking individual tickets on a public transport like bus or train. And also, this was, we didn’t have to worry about having a separate commute arranged for our visit to places within Sapa.

The cab arrived on time in the morning. And we started for Sapa around 9:00am in the morning. The journey from Hanoi to Sapa is smooth. With good road conditions. And beautiful landscape. We stopped on our way for breakfast at a roadside food outlet on the highway. The vibes were very similar to the ones we had on our numerous road trips in India where we stop on highway food outlets. Be it on our recent Gujarat road trip from Bangalore. Or, our road trip around Maharashtra last year.

There were not many veg options on the menu. So, we had some light packaged snacks. Afterwards, we continued straight to Sapa. The hill terrain starts after covering almost 70% of the journey. Again, almost very similar experience as when you do a road trip to Coorg, or drive to Kodaikanal from Bangalore, or take a trip to Ooty.

Sapa Accommodation

Upon arrival in Sapa, we checked – in into our hotel. The hotel was right on the main road. And the room we booked was a family room with 2 double beds. But beyond the beds, there was hardly many space left to move around and open our luggage in the room. There was also not much of a view from the room. So, we quickly freshened up and decided to step out for a late lunch around 4:00pm.

Exploring the markets of Sapa

As we came out of the hotel and started walking towards the main road in search of food options, we were greeted by some of the cutest winding lanes, beautiful cafes and decorated boutique hotels on our way, with a backdrop of the green hills behind !! And that is when I started to fall in love with Sapa. Finally we arrived at this beautiful cafe. And had one of the best meals in Vietnam here.

A random click from the streets of Sapa Vietnam

Afterwards, we mostly walked around the market areas, exploring the shops for some souvenirs. And admiring the beautiful little hill-town, letting it’s rustic charm do wonders to our mind. Finally we packed some food for dinner and headed back to our hotel for getting early to bed.

Day 2 of our 3 days Sapa trip itinerary from Hanoi

Moana Cafe

On day 2 of our 3 days Sapa trip itinerary from Hanoi, we started around 9:00am after breakfast. We had complimentary breakfast at our hotel. In the cute rooftop restaurant here. Also, this was the best part of the hotel. You could sit in a rustic setup. With the morning sun. And the cool breeze. Enjoying a hot cup of Vietnamese coffee !!

Inside Moana Cafe Sapa Vietnam

Anyways, post breakfast, first, we headed to the Moana Cafe.  This was also the first destination to explore today. Since, it was at a walking distance from our hotel. Overall, it is a themed cafe cum tourist spots. There is an entry ticket to the place. And with that you can buy a meal at the cafe. While you enjoy your meal, you can explore around the whole open space. Which consists of cute sitting areas, rope bridges along the edge of the mountain, a few huge statues. Alongside which you can click instagram worthy pictures and lots of flower beds and landscaped areas.

The Sapa pet farm

After spending around an hour here, we headed to the next stop. Which was just 200-300m from the Moana Cafe. And it was a pet farm! Again, there is an entry ticket to it. But you can buy food with it once inside. And you can also get complimentary food using the entry ticket. Even for the pet animals inside the cafe. There were many animals inside the cafe. Including Laama, sheep, dogs, goats, cows, rabbits and horses. And also a nice sitting area around the cafe as well as one around the cliff. The views of the green mountains and valleys from here were very refreshing and breathtaking. So, while the kids went crazy feeding the animals. And playing with them. I spent some time lounging around.

The Cat Cat Village

We called our cab driver over to the pet farm to pick us up. And from here, we started for Cat Cat Village. It is a beautiful Vietnamese – village – themed park built along the slope of the mountains. Think of it like the Vietnamese version of the Dubai Heritage Village. That we visited on our trip to Dubai. While the parking is on the top of the mountain. And the ticket counter right opposite the main entrance. But, there’s a 10 mins walking from parking to the main gate. From where the path downhill to the park starts. But, there are only park operated eco – buggies available beyond this point. And only till half the way. From where, the only option forward is to walk.

We slowly walked downhill. Good thing is that there were plenty of places to rest along the way. Finally after around 10 mins of walk, we reached down. Here, you will find a stream flowing in the middle. With village style cottages made alongside the stream. These host cafes and restaurants, Vietnamese handicrafts and souvenirs, paper lanterns, and many things to buy. Along the way you will also find manmade waterfalls, cute wooden bridges to cross over the stream to the other side. And beautiful spots with benches besides them. Overall, its a very beautifully crafted place to experience. We easily spent 2-3 hours here. And also had our lunch at one of the restaurants here. Post this we returned to the city.

Evening at Sapa Auditorium and Cafe

After coming back and taking little rest in our hotel, we stepped out in the evening. The national festival of Vietnam was nearing. And thus, there were performance rehearsals going on in the main auditorium of Sapa that lies right at the entrace of the main street. We enjoyed some of the performances here. Before crossing over to the other side of the town. And settled for dinner at first floor in one of the cafes. Which had beautiful vibes inside and out. Sitting on the open terrace of the cafe, we had very nice views of the street as well as the auditorium performances.

Post dinner we walked back to our hotel.

Day 3 of our 3 days Sapa trip itinerary from Hanoi

Today we had our breakfast in the morning. After breakfast, we proceeded to check out and started back to Hanoi. We started around 10am and reached Hanoi around 4pm.

Other places to see in Sapa

If we had little more time at hand, some of the other places that we recommend visiting in Sapa would include –

  • Fansipan Mountain. Since the experience looked very similar to a trip to BaNa hills. And we had done the later. So, we skipped visiting the Fansipan Mountain. As, visiting here will require one complete day’s time. Also, if you plan on it, it will be best to take a guided trip to Fansipan Mountain. Or hire a taxi for pickup and drop off to Fansipan Mountain. And book the tickets to Fansipan online in advance.
  • Places like Silver Waterfall, Love Waterfall. And Heaven’s Gate which are a little farther from the main town of Sapa.

What is the best time to visit Sapa

Late September to early november or late march to early may are considered to be the best time windows to visit Sapa. And we were lucky to visit here in the middle of April. Which falls right in the middle of the second season. But, around this time, you can also expect crowd in Sapa. However, the weather is pleasant. While days are sunny and can get hot. But the mornings and evenings are pleasant to cold. You might need a thin jacket or full sleeve cloths when visiting Sapa in this season. So, pack accordingly.

In conclusion, Sapa is one of the most beautiful hill towns that I have visited. Do include it in your Vietnam Trip Itinerary if you can!
